Steven Schoenfeld is the Managing Partner of Global Index Strategies LLC, a New York-based consulting firm and holding company with activities and investments in the following areas: Asset Management; Index Design and Construction; Asset Allocation and Strategic Investment Policy research; Capital Market Development and Exchange product enhancement; Strategic Planning and Positioning for financial products; Angel/Private Equity Investing; and Business/Financial Media(www.IndexStrategy.com )
Steven also serves as Investment Strategist at Red Lighthouse Investment Management LLC, a Registered Investment Advisor which manages efficient, low-cost global investment strategies for high-net worth individuals, foundations and endowments (www.RedLighthouseInvestment.com )
He is also the Founder and Chief Investment Officer of BlueStar Global Investors LLC, a financial services firm specializing in the Israeli and broader Middle East/Mediterranean capital markets (www.bluestarindexes.com). In addition, Steven is the Publisher of IsraelStrategist.com, a web portal focused on investment and innovation in Israel (www.IsraelStrategist.com ).
Steven re-opened Global Index Strategies LLC in 2010, joined Red Lighthouse in late 2010, and founded BlueStar and IsraelStrategist.com in Spring 2011, bringing 27 years of financial industry experience working with some of the world’s largest and most sophisticated investors to these ventures.
From 2004-2009, Steven was the Chief Investment Officer for Global Quantitative Management at Northern Trust Global Investments (NTGI), where he oversaw performance for more than $300 billion in index and enhanced index strategies committed to the world's major equity and debt markets. He chaired NTGI's Global Quantitative Investment Committee served on the firm’s Investment Policy Committee that established Strategic Asset Allocations for the firm’s high-net worth clients.
He also managed a team of Investment Strategists and working with his colleagues helped launch Northern’s first Emerging Market equity, International Small Cap Equity, Global Real Estate and Integrated International Equity strategies. He also spearheaded the development and launch of Northern Trust’s NETS ETF family – the first suite of local benchmark index ETFs in the US, including ETFs tracking flagship indexes such as Japan’s TOPIX, London’s FTSE-100, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, Germany’s DAX, France’s CAC-40, Ireland’s ISEQ-20 and Israel’s TA-25. Northern closed the NETS funds in February 2009.
Steven founded IndexUniverse.com, the primary online resource for the growing indexing and ETF industry, initially to supplement Active Index Investing and this E-ppendix. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of IndexUniverse.com from its inception in 2002 until Autumn 2004, when he joined Northern Trust and sold IndexUniverse.com to Index Publications LLC.
Previously he was a Managing Director at Barclays Global Investors (BGI, now part of BlackRock). In his six years at BGI, he served in a range of positions focusing on international and global index-based strategies, including Head of International Equity Product Management, Chief Investment Strategist and Team Leader of BGI's International Equity Management Group. In this latter role he was responsible for the management of over $70 billion in developed international and emerging market index investments, including BGI's international and global iShares exchange-traded funds. He was part of the team that launched the industry’s first Integrated International Equity strategies, seamlessly combining Developed and Emerging Markets, based on the MSCI ACWI ex-US benchmark. He also served as BGI's Global Coordinator for Index Methodology, and was a member of BGI's Global Equity Index Investment Committee.
Prior to joining BGI in 1996, Steven worked for five years at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) - the private sector affiliate of the World Bank - where he helped develop the IFC Investable (IFCI) Emerging Market Indexes (now maintained by Standard & Poor's) and structured the first emerging market index funds and derivatives based on the IFCI Indexes. Before joining IFC, Steven worked for seven years in the derivatives industry, including three years at the Singapore Exchange (previously known as SIMEX) where he was a 'local' trading Japanese stock index futures.
Steven was a Fulbright Scholar in Economics at the National University of Singapore, holds a B.A. in History and Government from Clark University, and received a M.A. in International Economics and American Foreign Policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). In addition to Active Index Investing, he is the co-author of The Pacific Rim Futures and Options Markets (McGraw Hill/Probus, 1992), and 'The Multiple Dimensions of Global Equity Risk Management' in Global Investment Risk Management (McGraw-Hill, 2000). He has also written numerous articles on investing and benchmark issues in publications such as Institutional Investor, Pensions and Investments, the Journal of Indexes, The Far Eastern Economic Review, and the Nikkei Financial Daily. Steven is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Indexes.
